From the composer: Echolocation is dedicated to the memory of my father, Alfred Oliver Carlson, a composer and student of Arnold Schoenberg. Alfred introduced me to Bridget Dolkas who commissioned me to write this work for the California Quartet in 2002. The title comes from a favorite word of my younger daughter, then 6. Though entirely notated, it is in the jazz genre in terms of melodies, rhythms and harmonies.
